We are also currently working with Environmental departments in academia to ascertain the carbon capture potential of long lay hay fields compared to planting trees. Carbon positive grassland/hay is possible because all grass varieties immediately start to sequester carbon as soon as they begin to grow, coupled with the fact that the grass is annually harvested without disturbing the soil and the ground is only ploughed every 10-15 years (sometimes much longer) the lifespan release of carbon is minuscule when compared to carbon retention over the same period.
