This June marks the 19th year of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), a vital campaign that shines a spotlight on one of the UK’s most beloved—but often misunderstood—pets: the rabbit. With the 2025 theme “Happy Hoppy Homes,” this year’s RAW focuses on helping rabbit owners provide the loving, enriching, and appropriate environments that bunnies truly need.

Despite being the third most owned pet in the UK, rabbits are frequently seen as low-maintenance or even suitable for young children without adequate supervision. Unfortunately, this has led to many rabbits living in environments that don’t meet their basic needs.

What Makes a “Happy Hoppy Home”?

A truly rabbit-friendly home goes far beyond a hutch and a bowl of food. Here are some essentials to ensure your rabbit’s home supports their health and happiness:

🏡 Spacious Living Quarters

Rabbits need space to hop, stretch, and explore. A hutch alone is not enough — it should be attached to a secure run or indoor area that allows for at least 3m x 2m x 1m of space. Think of it as a bedroom and a garden!

🐰 Bunny Buddies

Rabbits are highly social animals and should ideally live in pairs or groups. A neutered male and female pair often make a great match. Single rabbits can become lonely and depressed, so companionship is key to their wellbeing.

🧠 Enrichment & Stimulation

Provide tunnels, chew toys, digging boxes, and opportunities for foraging. A bored bunny is an unhappy bunny — enrichment keeps their minds and bodies active.

🥕 Diet Matters

The foundation of a rabbit’s diet is fresh hay — it should make up about 85% of what they eat. Add in leafy greens, a small portion of pellets, and always provide clean water. Discover our award-winning White Rabbit Hay by visiting our Shop.

🩺 Health & Welfare

Regular check-ups with a rabbit-savvy vet are essential. Keep up with vaccinations and be mindful of common issues like dental disease and flystrike.

🛏️ Safe and Comfortable Housing

Keep their home clean, dry, and secure from predators. Provide plenty of bedding (such as straw or paper-based materials), and ensure it’s well ventilated but not draughty.

Rabbit Awareness Week is an important reminder that rabbits, just like dogs and cats, deserve the best care we can offer. By understanding their needs and providing a true “Happy Hoppy Home,” we can give our rabbits the long, healthy, and joyful lives they deserve.

Let’s work together to make every bunny’s home a happy one!
